The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the period 2011-2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity in its Resolution 65/161. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is in full support of this decision. The United Nations Decade on Biodiversity is a tremendous opportunity to mainstream the objectives of the Convention into actions and policies across society.
The Decade coincides with the duration of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 adopted by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at its tenth meeting held in Nagoya, Japan. It contains ambitious, but crucial targets to help achieve the three objectives of the CBD and the Millennium Development Goals.
