Monitoring and indicators
The objective of monitoring wildlife diversity and landscapes is to identify and monitor changes taking place in abundance and distribution of species and in the development of communities and landscapes, and also to forecast potential development trends based on the information collected within the framework of monitoring both living and non-living organisms.
The data collected in the course of monitoring and the analysis thereof provide background data for implementation of measures for nature conservation and environmental protection and for planning of economic and construction activities on local government, individual and national level.
The purpose of monitoring communities is to observe the development of communities climatically characteristic to Estonian landscape or known as elements of cultural semi-natural landscape and evaluate the essence and causes of changes.
Monitoring of species is aimed at gathering information about native species, their populations and communities for species conservation purposes, and in order to protect and use species population and communities and habitats and site types as essential part of resources and human environment.
There is a system of environmental indicators available for Estonia (see link below). The examples referred to in the system provide an overview of Estonian environmental status.
