Estonia has more than 2300 lakes that are larger than one hectare. Together they cover more than 2100 km² or approximately 4.8% of Estonian territory. Major lakes are Lake Peipsi, Lake Võrtsjärv and Narva reservoir. Small lakes cover only 176 km2 or 8.5%.
Most of Estonian natural lakes are formed by land ice.
