Grasslands
Grasslands represent communities of herbaceous plants. Based on their formation they are distinguished as primary and secondary grassland communities. Primary grasslands are formed due to raising land on the coast and dunes (coastal meadows) or are preserved treeless due to flood (some floodplain meadows) or dryness of site (some alvars). Other grasslands have come into being due to human activities and are located on formerly forested areas.
Semi-natural communities represent anthropogenic semi-natural communities, first and foremost wooded meadows, alvars, floodplain meadows, coastal meadows but also other herding and hayfields, where mowing and herding have been the only human impact.
Estonian Seminatural Community Conservation Association has been established for protecting semi-natural communities (see link below).
