Drained peatland forests
Drained peatland forests have emerged from minerotrophic fens or transition mires with deep peat plain or sparse tree layer after long-term drainage. The first post-drainage forest generation consists of pines (Pinus sylvestris) and birches (Betula), which in most cases were present already before drainage. Dominant tree in the next forest generation may be spruce (Picea abies). Ground vegetation of drained peatland forests is poor in species. Species include sheathed sedge (Carex Vaginata), interrupted clubmoss (Lycopodium annotinum), round-leaved wintergreen (Pyrola rotundifolia). Depending on the moisture regime the ground vegetation may be similar to that of dry boreal forest, fresh boreal forest or fresh boreo-nemoral forest.
Generally there is a distinction made Vaccinum myrtillus and Oxalis drained peatland forest site types (classification by Paal).
