Forests
Approximately half (48%) of Estonian continental territory is covered with forest: alvar forests, boreal heath forests, dry boreal forests, fresh boreal forests, dry boreo-nemoral forests, fresh boreo-nemoral forests, floodplain forests, paludified forests, swamp forests and drained peatland forests and juniper thickets. Forest is one of the greatest values of Estonia both in terms of nature and economy. Most of endangered species in Estonia live in old forests. Estonian forests are believed to contain habitats of 20,000 species, whereas comprehensive overview is available for only one tenth of them. In terms of most abundant group of species – invertebrates – thousands of species have probably not been registered yet and observation of rare species that have been registered is also complicated.
