Species
There are approximately 35000-45000 species of organisms living in Estonia today, former studies have established the occurrence of ca 24 000 species. Therefore the composition of species on Estonian territory is largely unknown. Studies have been insufficient in case of Prokaryotes, Protozoa and several groups of invertebrates, especially insects.
Quite extensive studies have been performed with regard to vertebrates and vegetation. There are more than 300 bird species, ca 75 fish species, 5 reptile species, 11 amphibian species and 65 mammal species established in Estonia. Here grows approximately 1450 species of vascular plants, 550 species of moss and 2500 species of algae.
