Habitats

Despite its small territory, Estonia has very versatile landscape. Major habitats are forests, which constitute ca 48% of Estonian territory, but also grasslands and marshes.

English term "habitat" has two equivalents in Estonian: "elupaik" (natural habitat) in zoology and "kasvukohatüüp" (site type) in botany. The notion of site type comprises sets of rather similar environmental elements recurrent in various locations.

Classification of Estonian habitats is based on the "Classification of the Estonian vegetation site types" by Jaanus Paal.
